Some four years ago I realised that in order for the UK to reduce its carbon emissions, greater use needed to be made of buses with local access to the bus stops using personal bicycles. The problem with this system is that currently it is difficult to get a bicycle onto a bus. What was needed was a low weight (so that the bike could be lifted onto overhead racks in the bus) folding bicycle. After investigation I came up with an initial project specification.

After many attempts this is what the current design looks like.

The design uses three main structural elements, a rear frame, a saddle frame and a front frame. It has a single folding point just in front of the cranks, and folding, lockable pedals. It uses 20 inch BMX wheels, is designed with hub brakes, and uses standard spring steel springs for suspension. It uses standard derailleur gears, with 18 positions. The saddle slides down and the handlebar folds to the side. Current weight is 9.2Kg.

More technical details are available here.
